This article expects to show the methodology and main results of the statistical research conducted on the presence of professional female musicians in the higher education centres and orchestras of the European area, focusing on the female double bassists. The objective of the research is to answer the hypothesis of gender inequality in the current development of the professional mus ic career. Likewise, it hopes to show how the analysis of the results must be connected with a sociological basis substantiated in the feminist theory, in order to attempt to establish new, deeper conclusions. The research concludes with an affirmative response to the initial hypothesis, proven by the collected data, but it also hopes to set a precedent to future and similar researchs on different disciplines, as well as setting up a starting point that allows to perform comparative researchs in a near future, showing if the established tendencies have changed.
