Abstract

The transcription of music for wind instruments, from an orchestral or instrumental score, has been a constant
practice in music bands in countries with a tradition in this kind of formation.
Beethoven's music, transcribed for band, was accepted with interest by the Valencian groups that competed in the contest called Certament de bandas de Valencia (among the different denominations), until the original works for wind instruments were imposed.
This work tries to offer a vision on the subject of transcriptions for band, especially in the Spanish sphere, focusing its interest in the works of Beethoven performed in the Valencian contest, their frequency and the origin of the transcriptions when it is possible to determine it, in addition to noting the repercussion of this composer in the repertoire of the bands themselves.
The scope is limited to the first hundred years of the Certamen de bandas de Valencia, as it is a significant period in the evolution of Spanish bands and their repertoire, and immediately prior to the generalization of orders for original works as required titl es. Before the growth of personnel and instruments was significant, the band music repertoire was the majority in transcriptions and, of course, one of the most performed composers was Beethoven.
